Friesach? Have you heard about such a place? Unless you live somewhere near it, most likely you haven’t heard about it. Friesach is a true hidden gem in Austria that I discovered on the Internet by chance and decided to visit it after landing in Klagenfurt. Klagenfurt is the capital of the Austrian state of Carinthia and Friesach is just 40 km (25 mi) north of it. At the time of writing, Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) has direct connections with Vienna, Hamburg and Cologne/Bonn. Friesach is easily accessible by train from the main station in Klagenfurt.

Friesach is the oldest town in Carinthia and was first mentioned in 860. This small and very cozy town lies in a beautiful valley. What I find especially picturesque, are the ruins of the Petersberg Castle on one of the nearby hills.
