Moritzburg Castle near Dresden, Germany
Moritzburg is a small, sleepy town on the outskirts of Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony. It may be small, but it boasts a very beautiful Baroque palace, called Schloss Moritzburg. It is situated on an artificial island in the pond that you see in this photo. Schloss Moritzburg belonged to the kings of Saxony, who liked to hunt in the nearby forests. In the 16th century Duke Moritz of Saxony built a hunting lodge there and the castle is named after him. The original lodge was built in the Renaissance style and was called Dianenburg. It was later extended and remodelled in the Baroque style.
