The river Rhine at Bonn Shortly after Sunset, Germany
This is the view from the Drachenfels peak in Germany. On the left side of the Rhine you see the former German capital Bonn, on the right – the town of Königswinter. In the full resolution on the horizon you can recognize the skyline of Cologne with the famous cathedral.
The Drachenfels, meaning Dragon’s Rock in German, is a peak in the Siebengebirge range. With its 321 m (1,053 ft) it is hardly a mountain, but rather a hill. Nevertheless, it is very popular among hikers and tourists, because of the spectacular views and the close distance from the major cities of Bonn and Cologne.
To get there by public transportation you can take a train to Königswinter and walk from there. The climb is not steep, but if you don’t feel like climbing, there is also a short rack railway line, called Drachenfelsbahn (Drachenfels Railway). This line does not operate in the evenings or at night, so if you plan to shoot sunsets from there in the warm season, you will need to make the descent on foot. It is not bad, just remember to take a torch with you. To check the timetable of the Drachenfelsbahn, have a look at their website.
On the summit of the hill, you will see the ruins of the Drachenfels Castle, which was built between 1138 and 1167. There is also another castle nearby, namely Schloss Drachenburg. You will pass by it climbing up the hill. In the vicinity of Schloss Drachenburg, there is an intermediate station on the Drachenfels Railway.
All in all, the Drachenfels is an interesting destination for a day trip, if you’re staying near Cologne or Bonn.
